OUR STORY
Wallaba shingles have been in use since 18th century locally in Guyana. The shingles used in the 18th and 19th century were mainly manufactured manually which is referred to as handsplit shakes. Around 1960 machines were introduced to Guyana using circular sawmills which originated from Canada. These mills are still in use today by some cedar shingles operators in the US and Canada. Durable Wood Products (DWP) first experienced manufacturing of Wallaba shingles in 2001 with Superior Shingles and Wood Products Inc. using similar machines. In 2014, DWP begin manufacturing Wallaba shingles using modern state-of-the-art machines. With the new manufacturing, DWP shingles carried its own private brand which is Sandura® Premium Shingles. By enhancing the production techniques with our modern machines, there is less waste of forest resources, creating greater sustainable harvesting and reducing negative effects on the rainforest environment.
New technology used in the manufacturing of Sandura® tropical hardwood shingles is safer for experienced craftsmen and offers consumers a wider range of styles and shapes. Also, one of the greatest advantages of the Sandura® Wallaba shingles process is that it produces a very uniform product. Sandura® shingles are naturally beautiful, environmentally friendly and the manufacturing process has a low carbon footprint. These hardwood shingles have superior insulating value and are incredibly durable.
