Can Sandura® Wallaba Shingles resist hurricane winds?

Sandura® tropical hardwood shingles are becoming more popular after hurricane Irma.

Many home owners and resort developers have witnessed the damages that hurricane Irma caused across the Caribbean in September 2017. It was the most powerful Atlantic hurricane in recorded history, rising to a Category 5 storm when it made landfall on Barbuda on September 6, 2017. Its winds were 185 miles per hour for 37 hours.

Sandura® Shingles resisted hurricane winds in St. Barts – 2017

This vicious hurricane continued its path to destruction in the French and British West Indies islands. Shortly after the storm it was reported by several of our customers that there was little or no damage to their roofs, which were constructed using our Sandura® Wallaba Shingles.

The news spread quickly to many homeowners who were less fortunate, and immediately after the storm, Sandura® Shingles were being requested by several new customers.

Rosewood Resort – Little Dix Bay in Virgin Gorda. September 2017 were destroyed in the Hurricane Irma category 5 winds which made a direct hit to the site.

Not only are our Sandura® tropical hardwood shingles most suitable for use under extreme wind conditions, the natural beauty of Sandura® shingles surpasses all other wooden shingles such as Cedar shingles and Alaskan Yellow shingles.

Apart from its natural beauty, Sandura® Wallaba Shingles are long-lasting and is rated one of the highest performing roofs which can outlast asphalt, metal, and clay tile roofs. With proper installation, our wood shingles can last twice as long as Cedar shingles.

Be extremely cautious of cheap wallaba shingles being offered for sale.

There are some important factors to consider about the grade of shingles which can cause the roof to leak.

NOT ALL WALLABA SHINGLES ARE ALIKE

It is important to understand the grade defects in Wallaba shingles or wood shingles in general. If defective shingles are installed on roofs it can lead to leaks within months or even a few years after installation. Sandura® Wallaba Shingles represent only Premium Grade Wallaba Shingles.

Wood is a natural product which has inherent defects in the tree. After the tree is cut, the log is converted to shingles. During the conversion process from logs to shingles there are many defects within the log which can become part of the finished product. Many architects, contractors, installers and home owners may not be familiar with such defects which can compromise the integrity of the roof.

Possible Defects To Be Aware Of In Wood Shingles

How to verify you are receiving the correct amount of shingles per Bundle or Square:

Wallaba Shingles are typically packaged to have 5 bundles per square. One square = 100 SF Coverage. Therefore, each bundle should provide 20 SF roof coverage (10’x10’ area).
